MOB Mentality

A current trend in entrepreneurship is the increasing number of “mom-owned businesses” or MOBs.  Mompreneurs all around the country are changing more traditional views of women’s roles both at home and in the workplace.  In the never-ending balance of work and family, countless women have had to choose between either going to work or being a SAHM (stay-at-home mom).  However, for many, neither of these two options is ideal.  Office and home environments can both be extremely rewarding, each with its own types of challenges, fulfilment, enjoyment, and socialization.  Changes in technology and social attitudes have opened up a third possibility for women who want to strike the perfect balance between their professional and parenting lives: being a WAHM (work-at-home mom).

It can often be difficult to find an employer who allows for a flexible telecommuting position.  Traditional business hours, uninterrupted phone calls, and face-to-face meetings are virtually impossible with children in the home.  Therefore, for many, being a WAHM is a chance to embark on a journey into ownership of their own business.  While the exact number of MOBs is unknown, according to the National Association of Women Business Owners, 8.6 million firms are owned by women, many of whom are mothers.  These firms generated a combined $1.3 trillion in sales in 2013.

Endless Possibilities

The internet has revolutionized flexible work solutions in recent years.  Blog writers, social media consultants, web designers, and many others are able to offer their services to practically anyone in the world from the convenience of home.  Outside the home, many other MOBs are franchise opportunities geared toward mothers, such as Stroller Strides, that allow women to take their children to work with them.   As long as you are able to be flexible, have a dedicated workspace, and establish a schedule that makes sense for you, the possibilities from your MOB are endless.  The success of companies started by mompreneurs, including Baby Einstein and Liz Lange Maternity, has helped shift social opinion in recent years.  Moms are no longer made to feel guilty for wanting the best of both worlds, and they have proven that they are able to achieve it.
